Wilton House, Sheffield, England EPNS Silver Plate Flatware |
Rattail, so named in England, U.K., is only one descriptive name for this classic style pattern that was made in different versions by many makers in several countries for over 200 years. Other names are Classic and Tipped in the U.S.
Rattail refers to the back of the handle tapering into a strip resembling a tail.
See raised tail back detail here. Not all styles bear this distinctive feature, mainly forks and spoons.
If you know of additional names for this pattern, kindly email to let me know.
E.P.N.S. stands for Electro Plate Nickel Silver.
It is not a pattern name but a back stamp often used on European silverplated flatware, see it here.
